In Parashas Vayishlach, Yaakov Avinu (our father Jacob) returns to Yisrael and faces the real possibility that he may have to fight his brother and perhaps even have to kill someone in the process of their struggle.
In the
face of Eisav’s forces on the way to meet Yaakov, he sends a message to Eisav saying, 'I stayed by Lavan [Laban] and remained until now' / "עִם־לָבָ֣ן גַּ֔רְתִּי וָאֵחַ֖ר עַד־עָֽתָּה.”
Why did Yaakov tell Eisav that he had been staying with Lavan for the last 20 years?
