The Power of Influence
Â
This week's parashah is Noach, which is filled with teachings applicable to our lives today. I'd like to share an insight from the famous Beis HaLevi.
Â
The Torah states that all of the Earth was corrupted. Rashi explains that even the animals were engaging in abominable behaviors with different species. This raises a question: how is this possible? As we understand it, animals do not possess free will; they only act on instinct. For example, we don't see horses mating with lions because it's not in their nature.
Â
The Beis HaLevi explains that humans have the power to influence all of creation. In Noach's generation, humanity was so corrupt that they even transmitted this corruption to the animals. In response, Hashem brought the "mabul" (flood).
Â
From the Beis HaLevi's insight, we learn that our actions are so powerful that they influence our surroundings, including animals, let alone humans. Whether our actions are done privately or publicly, they still have an impact.
Â
I heard from Rabbi Brog that the same holds true in the opposite direction. Humanity also has the power to influence positively. He mentioned that when his "zeide" (grandfather) established his synagogue, he did it in front of the Meir Yeshiva in Brooklyn. He wanted his congregants to be influenced by the power of Torah emanating from Meir Yeshiva.
Â
May we have the merit to influence for the good, and may we all have the wisdom to choose where to live and with whom to associate, ensuring that we are influenced only in positive ways.
