The ritual of Kaparot
As we approach Yom Kippur, many of us seek ways to prepare spiritually and enter this holy day with a
renewed sense of purity. One of the ancient and meaningful customs that has been passed down through generations is the ritual of Kaparot. But what exactly is Kaparot, and why is it so significant?
What is Kaparot?
Kaparot is a traditional Jewish ritual that symbolizes the transfer of our sins, seeking atonement before Yom
Kippur. In this ceremony, we typically use a chicken or money to represent our repentance. The chicken or money is waved above our heads three times while reciting a prayer that transfers any negative decrees onto the offering. The prayer goes:
"This is my exchange, this is my substitute, this is my atonement. This (chicken/money) will go to charity, while I will enter and proceed to
a good, long life and peace."
Afterward, if a chicken is used, it is given to charity as food. If money is used, it is directly donated to those in need, emphasizing the importance of charity (tzedakah) as part of the atonement process.
Why is Kaparot Important?
Kaparot is much more than just a ritual; it is an opportunity for deep introspection and an act of compassion. As we reflect on the past year, our actions, and the areas where we hope to improve, Kaparot allows us to channel these intentions into a physical action. By giving to charity or performing this act of tradition, we connect with the values of humility, generosity, and the desire for a better year.
By participating in Kaparot, we open the doors to divine mercy, reminding ourselves that our actions have the power to change the course of our lives. It is a meaningful way to ask for forgiveness and to enter Yom Kippur with a clean and open heart.

This year, you have the opportunity to perform Kaparot through an act of charity by donating to King David Kabbalah. Your contribution will be used to support those in need, embodying the essence of tzedakah and spiritual renewal. Whether you choose to perform Kaparot with a chicken or through a monetary donation, your participation in this ancient ritual will bring blessings for the new year.
May this Kaparot help you achieve a year of peace, health, and spiritual growth.
