Honoring the Yahrzeit of Aharon HaKohen – Pursuer of Peace
On this Shabbat, 1 Av 5785 (Saturday, July 26, 2025), we commemorate the yahrzeit of
Aharon HaKohen, the first High Priest, who passed away at age 123 on that very day. His departure is uniquely recorded as “Passing of Aaron” in our calendar—an eternal reminder of his sacred legacy.
According to Torah tradition, Aaron, brother of Moses and Miriam, devoted his life to guiding Israel in holiness and
unity. He “personified kindness,” and his life’s work was the “endless and vigorous promotion of peace.”
The Sages enshrined his character in Pirkei Avot, as Hillel proclaimed:
“Be a disciple of Aaron—a lover of peace, a pursuer of peace, one who loves the creatures and draws them close to Torah.”
Rashi further explains that when Aaron died, “the entire House of Israel,” both men and women, mourned him—because he was the great peacemaker who
reconciled quarreling parties at home and in the camp.
In his merit, we encourage you to kindle a Shabbat candle before Shabbat starts (same time when women use to light Shabbat candles) on Friday, July 25, 2025, so as not to desecrate Shabbat. Let the flame awaken the spirit of shalom in your home and in
your heart. ç
As you light the candles, take a moment to reflect on Aaron’s pursuit of peace and invite blessings of harmony into your life. May this simple act illuminate your path and bring unity to your family, to your community, and to all who
seek the ways of peace.
Wishing you a peaceful and uplifting Shabbat,
