The custom of giving the half shekel before Mincha on

Ta’anis Esther:

As we wrote regarding Shabbos Shekalim, the deeper purpose of giving the half shekel is to overcome the dinim, to empower the merits of Israel and to minimize the positive effects of the charities of the idolaters. Because, as written in Tractate Baba Batra, Israel will not be redeemed until the effects of the charities of the nations has ceased.

On the day of Ta’anis Esther, before Mincha, it is customary that each person gives "a commemoration of the half of the shekel" to the Gabbai. The amount to give is the value of 9 Draham of refined silver. Some people give NIS 45, some give NIS 15, and some give 3 half shekels. I saw Rav Israel Avichai give, besides that money, also three shekels of Pidyon Haben. He told me to focus on the meditations done at the prayer Vayvarech Dovid, when donating.

The custom of kabbalists, aside for giving the commemoration of the half shekel, is to also give to a number of other charity of the highest caliber for the nation (as is expanded in our ebook on Purim).

Say this prayer before giving the “half shekel” of mincha today or any other tzedaka:

אני בצדק דמארי עיינין ומצדיקי הרבים עלי ועל עדת ישראל ה' הוא עושה חסד לאלפים בגזירת אלהינו מרחם הרחמים צדקה עשה עמנו ממעון החביב מרשימו דיקרא בת"ת אצי' יהוה צדקה אנו נותנים לאלהינו בקדושה בגיזרת צדקה נאמנה עלינו שיהא חביב לבעלה אני העושה צדקה רב להושיע ירושלם קריה נאמנה לפדיון חובותינו יהיה תמורה מאריה דאצילות צלותין ובעותין אנו מבקשים ממך מטהרת כתר מצוחצח ומנהיר על כל העולם מכתיר עלי האי כתרא בהאי שעתא רשימו דדיוקנא הנקראת בול הזיוה היא הנפרעת מן הגויים העושים צדקה כמ"ש בגמרא חסד לאומים חטאת.

ואנא ה' אלקינו אין אנו כן אלא אני מכוין לרומם קרן של ישראל סבא המדבר עלי בצדקה את צמח דוד עבדך מהרה תצמיח וקרנו תרום בישועתיך כי לישועתך קוינו כל היום ציון יקירין בפז חפץ מהולל משובחים ואני העושה צדקה בעד ציון היונק מחביון זיו נהורין צלותין ובעותין בעד ציון צועקים אני הצועק עליה ציון במשפט תפדה ושביה בצדקה.
